What makes you 1 of 7 billion?
MC:
Well let’s just say I am a 47 year old man child that wants to live life on his own terms and never wants to grow up. To achieve this, I am true to myself and partake in my passions which majority of society may think are very odd. First off, I live out of a Prius and storage unit so I can save money to attend Arizona Wildcats sporting events dressed up as super fan. Secondly, with money obtained from saving I can purchase needed gear and travel experiences to section hike all the long trails in the U.S. What is also unique about me is I have been a 3rd Grade Teacher for 21 years and still enjoy my job. There are not a lot of male teachers in a female dominated profession.
1/7:
What barriers have you identified in life that have kept you from following your passions?
MC:
1/7:
What methods have you learned to use to overcome those barriers?
MC:
During my chemo treatments even though some days were tough I tried to live a normal life as possible. I worked out when I could, went on mini hikes, still lived in my car & storage unit, and attended Arizona Wildcat football games. I lived life to the fullest even though my health situation was not ideal at the time.

My Thoughts on Marvin
I first met Marvin during my CDT thru-hike. I was crossing a snow field a few miles north of Battle Pass in Wyoming. We only spoke for about 5-10 minutes, before going our separate ways. We didn’t meet again until another chance meeting at the Winter Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake City two years later.
Since both of those meetings I have learned a lot about Marvin. His passion for life, hiking, U of A, teaching, and all the other things he’s listed above is unparalleled. You can hear it when he talks. You can see it in pictures when he’s following one of his passions. Last time we met, we sat at a restaurant and talked for 5 hours straight and it felt like 2.
Even throughout his recent fight with cancer, his attitude and outlook were amazing. Marvin is one of those people everyone wants around. He makes you look at life and appreciate it more.
During a recent trip to Salt Lake City, I met a different friends new girlfriend. Within the first 10 minutes of meeting her, she told me about a friend of hers from yoga who followed me on Instagram. That friend was Marvin. Like me, she described Marvin in the most amazing way. She lite up when speaking about him. This is why I choose to spotlight Marvin in my first Passion Profile. It’s his passion that makes Marvin 1 of 7 billion and the rest of us are better for it.
