My AZTR attempt was a Fall ITT. At the time it unknowingly gave me a preview of the race’s new time frame in late October. I definitely made some mistakes during my first go, which I would fix if I rode the Arizona Trail race again.
The three major mistakes I made were: not taking supplements, no sleeping bag, and not testing two pieces of gear thoroughly enough (water bottle mounts and my bike carrying harness). Other than these three items, most of the other changes I would make are simple ones I feel would work better.
The major change I would make for another ride of the AZT is how I approach the trail in general. I made the terrible mistake of underestimating the trail and over estimating my preparedness. Keep reading to find out how I would change my approach and the other small changes I would make.
Hopefully this post, If I Rode The Arizona Trail Race Again will help others with their own planning and increase their chances of a successful ride on the Arizona Trail.
