Sunny, 70

I was up late reading my book and listening to music on my Zune. But that didn’t stop me from getting up right at 6 AM. My stove ran out of fuel while heating up the water for my oatmeal. I attempted to eat it cold but it was too watery and just tasted nasty. I hit the road around 7 AM and made my way through Oxnard on West Fifth St. My friend said there is a bad gang presence there. I think I must have gotten up too earlier for them.

I then took Pleasant Valley Road all the was to Thousand Oaks and then a few more streets to my old friend Matt’s house. I showed up before 10 so nobody was home yet. Matt and his wife Alice showed up shortly after me. We spent the day shopping for food and just talking. I hadn’t seen Matt in 6 years and it was the first time I met Alice. After dinner a friend of Alice’s came over and we all sat and talked. It was nice to spend so much time with the same people, unlike when I met many people for short moments while on the road.

While riding through the farmland outside Oxnard, it was like being on a treadmill. The road was super straight and it seemed like I was getting no where. It was daunting. At one point I must have passed an onion patch since it smelled of onions really bad.

Glove count is 38.

Scatman 2011- Today was an interesting day.  Matt was the first person I knew I met on the trip since seeing Sam back at Manzanita in Oregon.  The last time I saw Matt he was married to his first wife and I had just finished the AT.  It was so good to catch up with him even though it was only for one night.  I really enjoy his presence as I feel he encourages me to be a better person.  I respect him for that and hope he knows it.  Staying at his home was great and I only wish we had more time to spend together.
